Chris Sutton hammers Rangers after Benfica draw, says one player was ‘terrible’

Chris Sutton has hammered Rangers on BT Sport (10.25pm) for failing to hold onto all three points on Thursday night as the Gers conceded an injury-time equaliser to Benfica during a 3-3 draw – and Sutton also criticised a player.

Rangers came into the match after winning their first two games against Standard Liege and Lech Poznan. However, they were 1-0 down inside two minutes as a mistake from Filip Helander resulted in a Connor Goldson own goal.

But the game turned on a knife-edge on 20 minutes. A red card for Nicolas Otamendi was shown after he pulled back Ryan Kent when through on goal. A Diogo Goncalves own goal, and a Glen Kamara strike, saw Rangers go 2-1 up.

Alfredo Morelos scored a third to break Ally McCoist’s record, only for Benfica to score two late goals. Celtic legend Sutton has ridiculed Rangers for failing to win – and had some choice words for £3.5million () man Helander.

“Defended poorly and missed chances,” Sutton said. “A big opportunity missed, and they’ve put themselves under unnecessary pressure. He [Helander] had a terrible game. He got caught out. It’ll feel like it is two points dropped.”

TBR’s view – A point away at Benfica still impressive

Still raging from Celtic’s 4-1 defeat to Sparta Prague at Parkhead, Sutton did eventually admit that Rangers would have taken a point away at Benfica before the match – but Steven Gerrard agreed that they should have got the win.

Sutton’s point that Rangers have put themselves under unnecessary pressure is true – but the Gers would have snapped your hand off to be on seven points from three games. Win in their next game, and they should be through.
