Chris Sutton delivers verdict on Rangers display, praises Kemar Roofe

that Rangers will be frustrated following their draw against Benfica, but predicted them to still qualify – and praised the growth of Kemar Roofe since his move to Ibrox.

Rangers came into the match having lead Benfica 3-1 in Portugal last time out, only to draw 3-3 after Darwin Nunez scored an injury-time equaliser. On Thursday, Rangers lead 2-0 but ended up drawing 2-2.

Scott Arfield gave the Gers the lead with a close-range finish after James Tavernier’s header hit the bar, before Roofe made it 2-0 with a stunning goal in the second half. However, Benfica came roaring back. Tavernier inadvertently scored an own goal.

Moments later, a lovely move from Benfica saw Pizzi crash home a left-footed effort into the roof of the Rangers net. Sutton said it was another good performance but thinks Steven Gerrard will be frustrated. He did praise Roofe, though.

“There in a real good place Rangers, scoring goals and not conceding,” “They have a real identity. Roofe is really growing into a Rangers jersey, his goal was brilliant – and what about that for a finish. That is a top, top finish.

“At that stage you are thinking, they’re looking good. They shouldn’t have let it slip, that will be the frustration for Gerrard. They still have work to do – I think they’re going to do it, but they’ve put themselves under unneccessary pressure.”

TBR’s view – Who is Rangers’ first-choice striker?

Even though he did not get his name on the score sheet on Thursday night, Alfredo Morelos was excellent. His hold-up play, his work rate and his ability to then bring others into the game after holding the ball up was stunning.

Roofe is sensational form, too. Both have scored seven goals – though Roofe has taken just 12 games to reach that total, while Morelos has played 17 times. Gerrard has changed Morelos, though, making him drop deeper – a la Harry Kane.

Morelos should remain first choice but having Roofe and Ryan Kent in behind Morelos is a front three that will send shivers down Celtic’s spine.
