Chris Sutton claims Tottenham sacked 49-year-old manager too quickly

Chris Sutton has suggested that Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked too quickly by Tottenham Hotspur.

Nuno Espirito Santo was dismissed by Tottenham after just four months in charge back in November 2021.

The Portuguese boss had guided Spurs to three consecutive wins in the league in August that season, including an opening-day win over champions Manchester City.

It led to Nuno being named the Premier League Manager of the Month. But things quickly went downhill thereafter.

The 49-year-old was eventually sacked after a 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United, which followed humiliating defeats against Arsenal and Chelsea beforehand.

Nuno has since lifted a title in Saudi Arabia with Al Ittihad but after being sacked in November, he replaced Steve Cooper at Nottingham Forest last month.

And after a bright start to life at the City Ground, Chris Sutton has reflected on his short tenure at Tottenham.

Sutton thinks Tottenham sacked Nuno too quickly

Speaking on , Sutton claimed that Nuno didn’t get the required time to make a real impact at Spurs.

“I think the start for Nuno has been really important because whether we like it or not, I think everybody would say the job he did initially at Wolves was really excellent and the third season they dipped a little bit but he viewed as quite a negative manager, and I think that was an issue for him at Tottenham,” he told the Monday Night Club.

“I don’t think he got long enough and it wasn’t necessarily fair him losing his job as early as he did leave it.

“But on the face of it, I thought it was an underwhelming appointment but winning games early helps.”

Nuno has delivered two wins from his opening three games at Forest and has made an instant impact, much like he did at Spurs.

But the Portuguese boss never felt like the right fit for Tottenham and that was largely due to his pragmatic approach.

His successor Antonio Conte also received plenty of criticism towards the end of his Spurs tenure due to the style of football.

Of course, Conte did have success in the season he replaced Nuno as he guided them to a top-four finish.

Yet, Nuno was up against it from the off at Tottenham as he was hardly the favoured candidate amongst supporters after a 72-day search.
