Chris Sutton claims Mikey Johnston deserves Celtic start against Rangers

Chris Sutton has claimed he wants Celtic attacker Mikey Johnston to start the Old Firm clash against Rangers on Sunday.

The 20-year-old has become an important player for Neil Lennon’s team this campaign and is one of several individuals to come through the club’s academy.

He’s played nine times across all competitions so far this season, scoring four goals and supplying three assists in return.

The left-winger has started just one of the opening three league games though and it will be intriguing to see if he’s picked on Sunday.

The Bhoys travel to bitter rivals Rangers for a Scottish Premiership showdown at Ibrox and the winner will go into the international break at the top of the table.

Ex-Celtic striker Sutton has put forward a case for youngster Johnston to earn a start against Rangers.

“Mikey Johnston is bang in form and deserves a proper crack at Rangers at Ibrox after getting hung out to dry in his previous two visits there,”

TBR’s View:

Johnston has played against Rangers twice at senior level in his career and ended up losing both of them, so would surely love to break that record at the weekend.

The creative attacker got the nod to start in the pivotal Europa League qualifying match against AIK on Thursday night and he scored during a win that booked the team’s spot in the group stages of the competition.

He’s slowly becoming a more important player in the squad and it would be a big vote of confidence from Lennon to start him against Rangers.
