Chris Sutton claims Leigh Griffiths could save Celtic a fortune

Chris Sutton has hailed Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths for his pre-season form and said he could save the club a fortune in the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old has been back playing football during the summer after a break in the second half of last season to deal with off-field issues.

He’s shown no signs of rustiness with six goals in just three friendly matches and the Champions League qualifiers are just around the corner.

The Scottish centre-forward has 104 goals in 203 games for the Bhoys to highlight his goalscoring ability, but it’s just a case of if he’s ready to go straight into the new campaign firing in front of goal.

Pundit and ex-Celtic attacker Chris Sutton believes that Griffiths will save the club a lot of money if he’s ready for the new season.

The Scottish champions need him to provide competition alongside the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Vakoun Issouf Bayo in attack.

“Leigh Griffiths is showing that he retains all of his old natural instincts for scoring goals,”

“If he can somehow manage to get back to his blistering best it might turn out to be a huge shot in the arm for manager Neil Lennon and save Celtic an absolute fortune in this transfer market.

“Right now I don’t think there is any question the club needs another striker. But Griffiths has it in his hands to change the scenario instantly.

TBR’s View:

Neil Lennon has to ensure that Griffiths’ health remains the priority, but it’s excellent news if he’s back on the pitch enjoying scoring goals.

He’s proven that he can be a reliable striker at the point of Celtic’s attack and having him firing will improve the team massively.

The Scottish champions need to ensure they qualify for the Champions League group stages, while they could have Old Firm rivals Rangers pushing them closer in the league this season.

Celtic’s attack looks a little inconsistent with Edouard as the main source of goals, but Griffiths is another brilliant option if available.
