Chris Sutton can’t believe what he’s now hearing about Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon
Anthony Gordon has been at the centre of a lot of attention this week.
The winger was brilliant for England against Ireland on Saturday evening, while he made some comments to ITV before the game that made headlines.
Gordon spoke about how disappointed he was that he didn’t play much at Euro 2024, and a follow-up piece by , suggested that Gordon’s non-selection may have been linked to his bicycle accident in training camp.
Speaking on , Chris Sutton and Ian Ladyman have been discussing this story, and Sutton simply can’t believe that could be the case.

Chris Sutton baffled by Anthony Gordon story
Ian Ladyman and Chris Sutton discussed Craig Hope’s story in The Mail.
“Interesting in the piece that Craig has written for us, Craig suggests that there may have been a link at the Euros between Gordon’s non-selection and the incident on the mountain bike. Remember he fell off that bike and picked up some nasty cuts and bruises. Craig suggests that could have peeved off Gareth a little bit,” Ladyman said.
“Come on. I love Craig but you’re telling me that Gareth Southgate would’ve left out Anthony Gordon because he fell off a bike. Come on, come on Craig, you’re better than that,” Sutton said.
Gareth Southgate isn’t that stubborn
Gareth Southgate did make some strange decisions during his time as England manager, but surely he’s not that stubborn.
Crashing your bike is an accident, it shouldn’t cost you your place in the England team.
The unfortunate reality for Gordon is that both Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden were coming off the back of better seasons, and they earned their places in the starting XI.
Gordon’s bike accident probably didn’t do him any favours, but that won’t have been the reason he was left out of the England team throughout the summer.
