Chris Sutton baffled after what Robbie Savage has now said about Chris Wood and Arsenal
It sounds absolutely bizarre to say it, but Arsenal could learn a thing or two from Nottingham Forest at the moment.
Indeed, The Reds are just behind the Gunners in the Premier League table, and, at the moment, Forest do have something that Arsenal are severely lacking.
Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
4 | 11 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 18 | 12 | 6 | 19 | |
5 | 11 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 15 | 10 | 5 | 19 |
Forest are on par with Arsenal right now, and that may be down to the exploits of one player in particular.
Indeed, Chris Wood has been on fire this season, in contrast to Arsenal’s number nines who have been misfiring.
Arsenal were told before the start of the season that they needed a striker, and now, speaking on BBC 606, Chris Sutton has argued with Robbie Savage about whether or not Wood would start for Arsenal.

Chris Sutton argues Chris Wood would start for Arsenal
Sutton and Savage had a disagreement about Wood and Havertz.
Savage says that he would have Havertz over Wood due to the fact he has scored big goals in big moments in the Champions League.
However, Sutton believes that argument is ridiculous, claiming that Wood has been the better player this season.
“You’d rather have Chris Wood over Kai Havertz. I mean, what do you think?” Sutton asked.
“It’s a good debate. And we both know why it’s a good debate. Remember, Ivan Toney heavily linked and Mikel Arteta justifiable maybe last season or the justification in the way that they finished and they got goals from all areas.”
“This season, though, this season, it does seem a problem for them. Should Arsenal have signed a natural number nine over the summer?
“That’s a really good debate, that. Chris Wood over Kai Havertz.”
“What about you, Rob?” Sutton asked.
“I take Kai Havertz. Over Chris Wood as a number nine,” Savage said.
“I’m just thinking Kai Havertz scored the winner of the Champions League final. Are you still there? I’m just saying, what Kai Havertz has done for Arsenal, he’s a terrific player,” Savage added.
“Yeah, but that’s ridiculous. How far do you want to go back? On this season, who would you pick?” Sutton replied.
Wood and Havertz’s stats compared
As Sutton says, this is a great debate to have about two strikers who are so similar but so different at the same time.
On paper, Wood and Havertz are very similar, they’re both physically imposing forwards who link up the game well.
However, Havertz is more technical than Wood, hence why he cost £65m, while Wood was just .
Based on the stats this season, it has to be said that Wood is outperforming the German.
Chris Wood this season | Kai Havertz this season
Games | 11 | 11 |
Goals | 8 | 4 |
Assists | 0 | 1 |
In fact, as difficult as it may be to believe, Wood’s overall Premier League stats are way better than Havertz’s.
Chris Wood all-time Premier League stats | Kai Havertz all-time Premier League stats
Games | 238 | 139 |
Goals | 77 | 36 |
Assists | 8 | 15 |
Games per goal | 3.1 | 3.9 |
Havertz is certainly the more glamourous player of the two in terms of his stock within the game and how he’s perceived, but in terms of effectiveness, Wood is just as lethal as Havertz.
Havertz has been praised for his clever play this season, but, at the end of the day, goals win games, not smart movement.
Maybe Arsenal should sign a player like Chris Wood.
