Chief Arsenal reporter shares what he knows about Nico Williams as things stands
Arsenal fans will no doubt constantly be refreshing their Twitter feeds as rumours appear left, right and centre with the transfer window coming to a close.
There’s plenty going on at Arsenal right now with Eddie Nketiah set for his medical at Crystal Palace and Mikel Arteta rejecting a bid from Southampton for Aaron Ramsdale.
There’s a fair few rumours about incomings too, as Arsenal are looking at signing a back-up for Bukayo Saka, plus a late Emirates Stadium move for goalkeeper Sam Tickle is also in the works.
As well as this, Edu Gaspar appears to be eyeing a striker move, though nothing is guaranteed.
And, chief Arsenal correspondent at Football London Kaya Kaynak has provided an update on the club’s current situation involving one particular attacking target…

Nico Williams to Arsenal stance uncovered
It was reported recently that Arsenal could launch a late move for Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams before the window closes.
Kaya Kaynak has provided an update on the current situation involving the Spaniard in a Q&A for , when asked about Arsenal’s forward situation.
“Arsenal are definitely trying to get a forward. There are a few irons in the fire between now and deadline day on Friday and Arsenal have kept tabs on their targets all summer. Obviously Nico Williams was the preference, but that’s not looking likely to happen as things stand.”
Is Nico Williams the type of player Arsenal need?
Nico Williams mainly operates as a left winger which is a position that the Gunners are already well stocked in, with Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli fighting for a starting place.
He does have the ability to play on the right-hand side which would be attractive to Mikel Arteta and Arsenal to take the load off Bukayo Saka. However, this takes away from one of Williams’ biggest threats, his ability to cut in from the left and shoot, so it’s not ideal.
His stats speak for themselves after bagging eight goals and 19 assists in all competitions last season, and we all saw what he can do at the Euros this summer.
However, as is the issue with most deals nowadays due to the lateness of the window and PSR, it would cost a fortune for the Gunners to sign the 22-year-old.
