Chelsea: Terry transfer battle; club record bid considered for playmaker; Conte praises record breakers
The report that two former Chelsea men are chasing John Terry to bring him to China, as Gus Poyet’s Shanghai Shenhua and Luis Felipe Scolari’s Guangzhou Evergrande battle it out for the central defender. Terry turned down Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou Evergrande last January but appears to be yet to decide on his future this campaign.
The 36-year-old has reportedly been offered huge wages of up too £320,000 per week to join them, which may make it a tough decision for the captain and club legend as he nears retirement.
Chelsea could also look to replace outgoing star Oscar by signing Real Madrid reject James Rodriguez in what would be a club record fee, claim the . They say that the fee for the Colombian would be in the region of around £75 million as they look to bring the attacking midfielder to the club.
Rodriguez has been on the outskirts of the Madrid squad this campaign but it remains to be seen how he would fit into a Chelsea team which failed to account for a central playmaker of very similar style in Oscar before his almost complete move to China.
After yesterday’s narrow victory over Crystal Palace, Antonio Conte praised his team but reiterated the need for them to remain focused on maintaining their current run of form, :
“If I don’t say I’m pleased for this reason (the 11-match run) I’d be a dishonest man. For sure, I’m not a person who loves statistics. I don’t like to see how many matches you’ve won. But this is my first season in England and it is fantastic [to have played] 17 games and to have won 14 of them. I like to see that in the present, but I want the future to be special for us. I only know one way for this, it is to work, work and work.”
However, they will have to extend that run against Stoke on Boxing Day without the services of Diego Costa who picked up his fifth yellow card of the season at Selhurst Park and will now serve a one match ban.
