Chelsea round-up: John Terry to leave; attention turns to Manchester City’s Joe Hart; race for Youri Tielemans
Chelsea have confirmed that club captain and legend John Terry will bring an end to his Blues career 19 years after his debut for the club and will leave at the end of the season. The decorated central defender said in an :
“After 22 years there is so much to say and so many people to thank at this great football club. From coaches, team-mates and staff to the fans who have given me so much support down the years, I can’t thank you enough.
“There will be opportunities for me to speak further about this over the coming weeks. I will decide on my future in due course, but for now I am committed to helping the team achieve success this season.”
The 36-year-old dropped out of the side after suffering an ankle injury in September and has played just six Premier League minutes since, with even those coming in November, and he will now look for new opportunities either domestically or abroad.
Another man who could follow him out of the exit door is Thibaut Courtois if Real Madrid can get their way, but the say the club are already targeting Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart as a potential replacement when he returns to England after his loan spell in Italy with Torino comes to an end.
England’s first choice stopper is expected to leave the club this summer and could be a solid replacement for Courtois given his experience in the Premier League, but the Blues will still be hugely reluctant to allow the Belgian to leave given his huge potential and superb displays this season.
Another potential summer addition is Anderlecht midfielder Youri Tielemans, as the report that both Chelsea and Manchester United are targeting the 19-year-old for a £25 million move to the Premier League in the summer.
Tielemans has attracted interest from all over Europe with his fine displays for Anderlecht, including in the Europa League, and the Belgian could look to test himself with a new challenge in England if Chelsea can persuade him to make the move.
