Chelsea Player Ratings: How did the Blues fare in victory over Southampton?
Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table back to seven points after comfortably seeing off mid-table Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.
Fresh from his match-winning cameo in the FA Cup semi-final, Eden Hazard put the leaders ahead after five minutes when he found space in the area to fire a first-time shot into the bottom corner.
Southampton grew into the game, however, and Oriel Romeu struck back against his former side when he prodded home unmarked from four yards after good work from Manolo Gabbiadini.
Gary Cahill headed the Blues back in front before the break and Diego Costa broke his goal-scoring drought shortly after to secure a critical three points for Antonio Conte’s side in their title hunt.
Costa finished off a superb one-touch move inside the penalty area before Ryan Bertrand grabbed a last-ditch consolation goal but it wasn’t enough to stop Chelsea moving seven points clear of Tottenham.
Read below for how The Boot Room rated Chelsea in their victory over Southampton.
Thibaut Courtois – Arguably could have reacted better for Southampton’s opener as it was his touch that deflected it into the path of Romeu to equalise, but aside from that he generally commanded his area well. Saved well from Tadic down low in a relatively quiet and comfortable second-half. 6.
Cesar Azpilicueta – Dealt well with the slippery Boufal once he moved out to the left-hand side of Southampton’s attack and was generally defensively sound. Uneventful evening for the Spaniard. 6.
David Luiz – Caught out of position on numerous occasions on Tuesday night and it certainly wasn’t his finest match in a Chelsea shirt. Lost the run of Gabbiadini for Southampton’s equaliser but did grow into the match as it went on, becoming more dominant in the air from set-pieces. 6.
Gary Cahill – Allowed Romeu to ghost in front of him to prod in the equaliser and looked like he was struggling against Southampton’s pace and the trickery of Boufal in attack all evening. Solid and dependable as ever in the air though and restored Chelsea’s lead on half-time with a neat header. 7.
Victor Moses – One of the more anonymous matches of his season to date, but he put himself about well as the visitors pushed in the first-half. Didn’t offer too much in the Saints’ half of the field. 6.
Marcos Alonso – Leapt well to keep the ball alive in the lead up to Cahill’s goal but it was otherwise a fairly subdued performance from the Spaniard. Went about his business well but unspectacularly. 6.
Nemanja Matic – Seemed to have more confidence to drive forward after his stunning strike at the weekend and had a shot deflected wide early on. Found the movement of Tadic and Boufal hard to keep track of at times but had little to deal with defensively once Costa sealed the three points. 7.
N’Golo Kante – Newly-crowned PFA Player of the Year, he was at his usual imperious best at Stamford Bridge and even nearly got on the scoresheet after a brilliant lung-busting dribble. Rare clumsy challenge earnt him a booking but he marshalled the Saints well in the middle of the park. 7.
Cesc Fabregas – Played a lovely ball down the line to find the run of Costa in the build-up to the first goal and impressed throughout in only his 10th start of the campaign. Lent himself equally well in defence and topped it all off with a fine assist; now has the second-most assists (103) in Premier League history. 8.
Eden Hazard – Continued from where he left off on Sunday with a sweeping first-time finish into the bottom corner for a career-best 15th Premier League goal of the season. Could have had a hat-trick if he had more composure in front of goal but it was another dominant display from the Belgian. 7.
Diego Costa – Stood the ball up well to find Hazard for the opener and scored his first goal since early March (six games) with a powerful header past Forster in an influential display. Has now recorded 50 Premier League goals in just 85 games – one quicker than Barcelona’s Luiz Suarez. 8.
Pedro – Had a good chance to make it four but curled his shot just wide of the post in an energetic cameo performance after being moved down to the substitute bench. 6.
John Terry – In a week where it was announced he’s leaving at the end of the season, he was given a ten-minute run out on his 714th Chelsea appearance. N/A.
Willian – Came on during injury-time to give Hazard a standing ovation. N/A.
