Could Chelsea make a sensational £37.5 million move for Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto?

After Antonio Conte made it clear that Chelsea are looking to make as many as four more additions to his squad,  say that Barcelona star Sergi Roberto could be one of them. The versatile midfielder has impressed since breaking into the side in 2015 and could now become a top target for the Blues.

What would he bring to Stamford Bridge?

One of Roberto’s biggest strengths at the Camp Nou has been his versatility. Having come through the ranks as a solid central midfielder, he has played much of his first team game time at right-back as a makeshift solution after the exit of Dani Alves and Aleix Vidal’s horror injury.

That could make him a candidate to take up the wing-back role at Chelsea, and he would be a perfect fit. His solid defensive skills, only being shown up by the most elite of wingers, and strong attacking contribution could make him a valuable addition.

Roberto would also be a good addition for the club in midfield, given his athleticism and vision which are two key parts of the midfield game for Antonio Conte. With youth on his side, he will only get better with experience.

Is a move likely?

Barcelona are unlikely to want to sell, meaning that Chelsea could be forced to activate his release clause at £37.5 million. That is not a ludicrous fee and would easily be within Roman Abramovich’s reach if Antonio Conte wants to go for the 25-year-old Spaniard.

Roberto came through the ranks at the Catalan club and may be reluctant to leave. That said, having been played out of position at right-back under Luis Enrique, he may be tempted to try his luck elsewhere in order to establish himself as a central midfielder.
