Chelsea linked with interest in Antonee Robinson

According to , Chelsea are showing an interest in Wigan Athletic defender Antonee Robinson. Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also listed as admirers of the left-back.

🐈Robinson certainly seems to be in demand. The 22-year-old almost joined Italian giants AC Milan in January, but the deal ultimately fell through. Given the suitors he has, it’s highly unlikely that Robinson will still be a Wigan player come the start of next season. The Latics can expect to make a profit on the youngster though. According to the aforementioned Mirror report, they only parted with £1.98 million to prise him away from Everton last summer.

Chelsea’s interest in the USA international may surprise some, but given his managerial experience in the Championship, Frank Lampard likely has a good knowledge of Robinson’s quality. The Blues are also right to be in the market for a new left-back. Marcos Alonso’s best days at Stamford Bridge seem to be behind him. The Spaniard has only managed eight league appearances for Chelsea so far this season, and doesn’t seem to be in Lampard’s plans. Moving Alonso on in the summer would likely be enough to fund the London outfit’s move for Robinson.

However, Robinson would face a huge challenge in stepping up from the Championship to the standards expected at Chelsea. However, under Lampard’s guidance, the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham have already successfully made that transition.
