Chelsea fans discuss performance of 26-year-old during win
Chelsea squeezed through to the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
Kai Havertz had given the Blues the lead just before half-time; although Che Adams equalised very early into the second half.
That ended the goals and it meant a second consecutive penalty shootout for Chelsea in the competition.
Just as they did against Aston Villa in the previous round, Thomas Tuchel’s men prevailed once again.
The talk after the game was regarding the performance of Saul Niguez. He was given another chance to shine and some supporters were impressed with him.
It’s not been an easy transition to life in the Premier League for Niguez. He checked in from Atletico Madrid and has been forced to wait patiently.
He has made just one appearance for the Blues in the Premier League and has been an in five other matches.
He has played in both cup games, however, and also played for 25 minutes against Malmo in the Champions League last week.
The signs were there last night that he can get up to some kind of form pretty quickly and that bodes well for Chelsea.
What did Chelsea fans have to say about Saul Niguez?
For a change, they were pretty impressed. Some still felt that the Spaniard has some work to do but this was a step in the right direction at least.
Niguez had been an Atletico hero prior to heading to Chelsea. He played 340 times for Los Rojiblancos, scoring 43 goals and claiming 20 assists.
He helped Diego Simeone’s men defy the odds and win the league title last season; whilst he’s also tasted glory in the UEFA Cup with the Spaniards.
Now, he’ll be hoping to become a regular at Chelsea in the near future. On the basis of his performance last night, more opportunities might not be too far away.
