Chelsea: Courtois discusses speculation; Zouma latest; Abramovich “happiest he’s ever been”
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who fuelled rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid earlier this season by claiming that he one day hopes to return to Spain, has dismissed speculation by telling :
“I never had anything with Real Madrid. I did not see anything published, but I never had any contact with Real Madrid. I am happy at Chelsea. Everything is going very well – it is a great club. There is no reason not to be happy at Chelsea. You never know what will happen in the future, but at the moment I am very well, in a very good atmosphere. There was never any talk about a possible return to Atletico. Oblak is doing very well and I am happy about that. These are rumours that come out from people who do not know anything.”
The Belgian 24-year-old has kept five consecutive clean sheets and is playing an increasingly important role in Antonio Conte’s team given his current form.
Kurt Zouma continued his comeback by scoring twice in a mammoth 13-12 penalty shoot-out victory over Oxford United after a 1-1 draw for Chelsea under 23s at Stamford Bridge in the Checkatrade Trophy. Oxford scored a late equaliser, but despite the point for the draw and the bonus shoot-out point, the Blues youth team were knocked out at the group stage.
Zouma produced the best display on the night and was crucial to his team as it appears that he is increasingly nearing a return to first team action given that he has now come through 90 minutes for the first time in eight months.
Former player turned pundit Pat Nevin has also spoken to reveal that he thinks that owner Roman Abramovich was delighted by the Blues’ display in the 5-0 win over Everton at the weekend. He :
“After the game I watched Roman Abramovich walk across the field with the biggest grin you are ever likely to see from him. We didn’t win anything on Saturday but the man who has put so much into the club seemed to exude the idea, “This is why I have got involved, not only to be successful but to be successful while being creative, entertaining and quite frankly rather beautiful on the eye to watch.”
With speculation suggesting that he is set to hand Antonio Conte a massive transfer budget in January, it would seem likely that Nevin is correct and things could be about to get even better for the Blues.
