Charlton Athletic XI if they kept their best players featuring Joe Gomez
The climax of the 2021/22 campaign marks 15 years since Charlton Athletic’s eight-year stay in the Premier League came to an end.
The Addicks who got relegated to the Championship in 2020 finished this season in 13th-place in League One under the stewardship of Johnnie Jackson.
It was the second consecutive season outside of the second tier of English football for the south-east London side.
With several of the Addicks’ former players shining in the Premier League or in European competitions, we’ve put together an XI of former Charlton Athletic players that look a solid side on paper…
Nick Pope
After being signed from Bury Town in the summer of 2011, Pope went on to make 38 appearances for Charlton Athletic before Burnley snapped him up in 2016.
Since signing for the Clarets, Pope has been the undisputed number one at Turf Moor for the last four seasons and his impressive consistency has seen him receive eight caps for England.
With Burnley battling for Premier League survival the 30-year-old, who will have aspirations of forming part of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, may have to seek a summer move if the Clarets fail to beat the drop.
Anfernee Dijksteel
The Dutchman arrived at the Valley in January 2016 from the Nike Academy and he made his debut for the Addicks in 2017.
After making 59 appearances for Charlton Athletic, the former Netherlands Under-20 international was signed by Middlesbrough in August 2019 and made his last appearance for Lee Bowyer’s side on the opening day of the Championship season.
Dijksteel has made 86 appearances for Boro this season and the number of games he is featuring in for the Riverside Stadium club is increasing year on year.
Joe Gomez
The highly-rated Charlton Athletic Academy graduate had one season in the Championship before Liverpool signed the talented defender for in June 2015.
Gomez has made 140 appearances for the red half of Merseyside and he’s had to battle his fair share of serious injuries.
The 11-time England international has won the Premier League and Champions League during his time at Anfield.
Ezri Konsa
Similar to Gomez, Konsa was another graduate of the Addicks’ Academy system and he had two full seasons at the Valley before joining Brentford in 2018 for .
The former England Under-21 international only had one season with the Bees before reuniting with his former Brentford boss Dean Smith at Aston Villa.
The Villains paid to sign the centre-halve and Konsa has been a regular at Villa Park ever since his arrival.
Jay Dasilva
The former Chelsea youngster had two loan spells at the Valley from 2017 to 2018 and made 54 appearances for the Addicks.
Following a season-long loan with Bristol City for the 2018/19 campaign, Dasilva signed for the Ashton Gate side on a permanent basis in the summer of 2019.
The 24-year-old has made 106 appearances for the Robins.
Jonjo Shelvey
A product of the academy at the Valley, Shelvey became the youngest ever Charlton first-team player to turn out for the south Londoners at the age of 16 years and 59 days in April 2008.
The technically-gifted midfielder made 49 appearances for the Addicks before Rafa Benitez signed Shelvey for in 2010.
The six-time England international made 69 appearances for Liverpool before joining Swansea City where he made 96 appearances.
Shelvey has been at Newcastle United for six years and is closing in on 200 appearances for the Magpies.
Conor Gallagher
The talented midfielder spent the first half of the 2019/20 Championship campaign on loan at Charlton Athletic and Gallagher made quite the impression.
Gallagher scored six goals and provided four assists from 26 matches before moving to Swansea for the second half of the season.
The 22-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season and his performances have seen him break into Gareth Southgate’s England side.
Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson
The Icelandic winger spent two seasons at the Valley after arriving from Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar before joining Burnley in 2016.
Gudmundsson scored six goals and provided 11 assists in his last season as a Charlton player, but he couldn’t prevent the Addicks from getting relegated down to League One.
The 31-year-old has played over 150 games for the Clarets but he hasn’t played since January after picking up an injury against Arsenal.
Joe Aribo
The Nigeria international scored 15 goals and provided 16 assists from 97 Charlton Athletic appearances before joining Rangers in a deal which £300,000 because of cross-border transfer rules.
In his last season at the Valley, Aribo scored 10 goals and helped the Addicks secure promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.
In 145 games for the Ibrox side, the 25-year-old has 25 goals and 25 assists to his name and he’ll be targeting a place in Rangers’ starting line-up for the Europa League final against Frankfurt in Seville.
Ademola Lookman
The Nigeria international, who had scored seven goals in 25 games for Charlton during the 2016/17 campaign, became the most expensive signing from League One after Everton splashed out to sign Lookman in January 2017.
After a year with the Toffees, the winger joined RB Leipzig on loan for the remainder of the 2017/18 season before joining the German giants on a permanent deal for £22.5m in July 2019.
Lookman spent last season on loan at Fulham and is currently in the midst of a season-long loan at Leicester City.
Karlan Grant
Another man to come through the Charlton Athletic Academy was Grant who went on to score 21 goals from 98 matches for the Addicks.
After joining Huddersfield Town in January 2019, Grant scored 23 goals from 57 matches for the Terriers.
Following a 19-goal season in the Championship, West Brom splashed out to bring Grant to the Hawthorns in October 2020. He scored 18 goals in the second tier of English football this season.
