Charlie Mulgrew explains what is ‘brilliant’ about Rangers rise, discusses title race with Celtic
that it is “brilliant” to see Rangers finally catch up with Old Firm rivals Celtic and match them in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.
Rangers have struggled to rival Celtic since returning to the top flight of Scottish football. Two third-placed finishes saw Aberdeen prove to be Celtic’s closest title rivals, in Rangers’ first two seasons back in the Premiership.
Steven Gerrard guided Rangers to second place last season and helped the Light Blues to maassive strides towards Celtic. Two successive Europa League group stages has enormously helped, while beating Celtic twice last season has closed the gap.
Both sides are currently on equal points going into Wednesday night’s fixtures. Former Celtic star Mulgrew – who is a Celtic fan – claims it is “brilliant” to see Rangers finally rivalling Celtic for the title, stating it is better for Scottish football.
“It’s brilliant, they’ve got the big teams back [at the top] and it’s great for Scottish football to have a title race like that,” “Rangers have been behind in the last few years but they’re doing well this year so far so we’ll see how it ends.
“I always watch the games and look for the Celtic result, it’s something that never leaves you. It’s massive [for me], I’m a Celtic fan, it is something I always look to. I’m obviously hoping Celtic win the league but we’ll see what happens.”
TBR’s view – Can Celtic keep Rangers at bay?
Celtic did beat Rangers at Ibrox earlier in the season and the Old Firm clashes between the two sides are likely to prove decisive. Rangers and Celtic go head to head on Sunday in the Betfred Cup final, and that will be a good marker.
After winning the last nine domestic trophies, Celtic have that winning mentality in their side – players that know how to win silverware. But Rangers are improving, and are hungry under excellent manager Gerrard.
Yes, Celtic can keep Rangers at bay but the Gers are more than capable of toppling Neil Lennon’s side.
