Charlie Mulgrew claims Celtic really need 29-year-old right now

Charlie Mulgrew that Nir Bitton is one of the players Celtic really need right now, as he lauded the Israel international’s ability.

What’s the story?

Celtic are still working things out under Ange Postecoglou. There have certainly been glimpses of what the boss wants.

However, there have also been times when they have been reminded that it may be some time before it all becomes second nature.

While that is the case, it appears imperative that Celtic keep themselves in the hunt for success. They showed a lot of character at the weekend to beat Aberdeen 2-1.

Bitton played the large majority of that game. And Mulgrew believes that the 29-year-old has an important role to play over the coming months.

“The thing about Nir is he’s a really good passer of the ball. His technique is fantastic,” .

“From a club point of view, he’s one of the players Celtic really need right now because he understands what it’s all about to play there.”

Bitton experience important in Celtic spine

Celtic are very much a work in progress right now. But there is a decent spine being formed in their side.

Obviously, Callum McGregor is the first name on the team sheet whenever fit. And in truth, Joe Hart is not far behind at this stage, it seems.

The defence is still coming together. But Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers are getting plenty of game-time together under their belt.

Having Bitton in midfield alongside McGregor could be a wise move. He rarely steals the show – he has scored 13 goals in 241 games for the club.

But, as Mulgrew suggests, Bitton knows better than most about the expectations that come with playing for Celtic.

And the former Hoops man clearly feels that he still has plenty to offer Postecoglou’s side.
