Charlie Austin rates Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips as Championship’s best young player

West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United may have been rivals in the hunt for promotion throughout the Championship season but that does not mean that game doesn’t recognise game.

At least, that would appear to be the case based on Charlie Austin’s Twitter response to a question handed to him regarding the best young player in the Championship.

Austin, who has scored nine goals for the Baggies this season, made it clear there was no bias in his answer when he named Leeds United’s midfield dynamo Kalvin Phillips as the best young player in the division.

It is not the first time that Austin has been full of praise for the player. Last month he stated his belief that his Baggies team-mate Matheus Pereira is the best player in the league, with Phillips a close second, but making it clear he would ‘have a very good career’.

Considering that the Leeds midfielder is five months older than Pereira, it seems strange he is now calling Phillips the best young player in the division over his Hawthorns team-mate.

In fact, that point was put across to Austin, who laughed off his error by suggesting that Pereira was out of the running, as the best overall player.

Of course, Austin may simply mean that he sees more growth in the future for Phillips. That would be a fair comment as the midfield maestro continues to improve even at 24-years-old under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa.

Leeds fans will argue that Phillips is, in fact, the best player in the league, regardless of age, and will be happy to back up Austin’s viewpoint.

Plus, Pereira is only on loan at West Brom from Sporting Lisbon whilst Phillips, well he is all Leeds.
