Charlie Austin claims an ‘unfortunate situation’ involving Leeds star has arisen

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has surely fired his way into England contention this season, you’d think.

The Whites marksman has enjoyed a superb campaign, registering an impressive 12 goals and six assists from 22 Premier League appearances.

With the European Championships on the horizon, Bamford’s upturn in form and impressive top-flight credentials couldn’t have come at a better time.

That said, QPR on-loan striker Charlie Austin doesn’t think the 27-year-old should be in the squad for the Euros.

Speaking on (9am, 10 February), Austin named Harry Kane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin alongside Danny Ings as the strikers he would pick.

He said: “Ings being the third striker he offers something, his energy is infectious to everybody else so I think whether he starts or comes off the bench he’s going to be infectious for the rest of the team.”

When pressed on whether Bamford’s link-up play could see him called up, Austin responded: “Yeah but Harry Kane can do that and that is an unfortunate situation, he’s our talisman.”

It’s a good job really that debate is raging about which attackers should make the England squad based on so many forward players doing so well this term.

Bamford is a top-quality striker who has come a long way this season and has plenty to offer Southgate.

He’s shown he can score goals and get assists against top sides, not to mention the ability to press throughout the game, something he’s used to week in, week out under Marcelo Bielsa.
