Sunderland have sacked manager Jack Ross after a disappointing start in their bid to gain promotion from League One at the second attempt and return to the Championship – and Charlie Adam has suggested the perfect replacement.
Ross, 43, took over in the summer of 2018 after Sunderland were relegated from the Championship into the third tier. He stabilised the club, guiding them to a fifth-placed finish and a chance of promotion from the play-offs.
However, Sunderland lost in the play-off final to Charlton who have gone on leaps and bounds in the second tier under Lee Bowyer. But Sunderland have hardly taken League One by storm, winning just five of their 11 league games.
Sitting in a respectable sixth place, Sunderland are eight points behind leaders Ipswich Town. Assistant Adam Fowler has been placed in temporary charge, but Reading midfielder Adam has suggested Ian Holloway on Twitter.

TBR’s view – Holloway could be perfect for Sunderland
Holloway has enormous experience in the Football League. Bristol Rovers, Leicester City, Plymouth Argyle, Blackpool, Millwall, Crystal Palace and two spells at Queens Park Rangers have seen Holloway last 23 years in management.
But 56-year-old is yet to return to management since being relieved of his duties for a second time at QPR. During his career, he has picked up three promotions as a manager – QPR in 2004, Blackpool in 2010 and Palace in 2013.
He has managed big clubs in the past, and gained promotions. Holloway is the ideal candidate for Sunderland.
