Charlie Adam says midfielder Liverpool released was actually unreal in training

Charlie Adam was lucky enough to play with some absolutely incredible players during his time at Liverpool.

The Scot made a blockbuster move from Blackpool to Liverpool in 2011, and that must’ve been a real culture shock.

Adam went from playing with the likes of Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Brett Ormerod to the likes of Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard at Liverpool.

Now, speaking on I Had Trials Once, Adam has reserved some special praise for another player he worked with at Anfield.

Indeed, according to the former midfielder, Alberto Aquilani was actually an unbelievable player in training, but, unfortunately, he never quite made the desired impact at Liverpool.

Charlie Adam says Alberto Aquilani was unbelievable

Adam spoke about some of his former Liverpool teammate, and he hailed Aquilani.

Indeed, the 39-year-old says that Aquilani, technically, was an incredible player, but he had a bad ankle so that stifled his progress at Anfield.

“So, I was competing against them. Lucas Leiva. Yeah. Spearing. Gerrard. Um, who else played centre midfield?” Adam pondered.

“Alberto, what was his name? Alberto, Italian international.

“Good player. His ankle was not great, but he was… Well, technically, he was an unbelievable player.

“Played for AC Milan and all that.”

Italians to have played for Liverpool

Aquilani didn’t quite have the best of times at Liverpool, and, strangely, that has been something of a trend at Anfield over the years.

Aquilani was ultimately released by Liverpool after playing just 18 league games.

Indeed, Liverpool really haven’t had the best of records when recruiting Italian players over the years.

Italians to have played for Liverpool
Mario Balotelli
Federico Chiesa
Alberto Aquilani
Fabio Borini
Andrea Dossena
Daniele Padelli
Gabriel Paletta

Mario Balotelli was a flop at Liverpool, while Federico Chiesa was criticised for his performance against Plymouth at the weekend.

Fabio Borini never really made it at Liverpool either, while Andrea Dossena was probably the best of the bunch.

For some reason, Liverpool have really struggled to find any quality from Italy over the years, and while Chiesa has had a slow start to life at Anfield, he’ll be hoping to kick on and buck that trend in the coming years.
