Charlie Adam reckons one Rangers player could depart for England

that he reckons Jermain Defoe could leave Rangers when his contract expires and return to England – but also reckons the veteran could remain in a coaching capacity at Ibrox.

Defoe, 38, has entered the latter stages of his career and under Steven Gerrard, the 57-time England international has also fallen down the pecking order following the summer additions of both Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten.

The former Tottenham, Sunderland, West Ham and Bournemouth striker has entered the last six months of his contract and could be approached by English clubs on a pre-contract arrangement.

He has managed just nine appearances all season, scoring four goals but his future at Rangers is in doubt. Asked about Defoe’s next move, ex-Rangers and current Dundee midfielder Adam reckons he could go down south.

“If Stevie G wants him round to be as an experienced player or to go into the coaching side, that might be something he looks at. He might want to go back down south and start something else. I don’t know,”

TBR’s view – Defoe should be kept as player coach

Clearly, Defoe is a massive asset on and off the pitch at Rangers. He is still chipping in with goals given the odd chance, but at his age, his experience is pivotal around the changing room and among the first team.

With a player like Alfredo Morelos at the club, having Defoe on side is only going to see the Colombian improve. Perhaps increasing his coaching responsibilities would be a smart move by the Rangers board.
