Charlie Adam reckons free agent striker is on his way to Celtic or Rangers
that he expects to see Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor join either Scottish champions Celtic or their Old Firm rivals Rangers in the coming months – as his contract looks set to expire.
Taylor, 30, is expected to leave The Addicks this summer after impressing in his 22 Championship appearances throughout 2019-20 – scoring 11 goals in those matches despite Lee Bowyer’s side being towards the bottom of the division.
The striker hit the headlines this week after he was one of three Charlton players to inform Bowyer that he would not feature between now and the summer – along with Chris Solly and David Davis – as he does not want to get injured with his contract up.
The Montserrat international has experience of Scottish football, netting 29 goals in 42 Falkirk appearances and 12 in 36 at Partick. He has played 35 times in the Scottish Premiership, scoring 11 and creating six.
However, he is a much better striker these days compared to his original spell in Scotland. Available on a free, Adam reckons either Celtic or Rangers will sign Taylor – given the Old Firm rivals are reportedly keen on the soon-to-be free agent.
“We played Charlton earlier in the season he tore us apart. I was like, ‘this kid is good’, and I never realised he’s 30,” “He’s a good player and it wouldn’t surprise me if Rangers or Celtic try and take him because he’s out of contract.
“He’ll have a few options in the Championship too, and maybe a Premier League club would even take him because of his goalscoring record over the last few years. He’s in a good position, and that’s what his agent will be saying to him.”
TBR’s view – Which club needs Taylor more?
Celtic could be about to lose Odsonne Edouard this summer with a number of Premier League clubs reportedly interested. Tottenham Hotspur are the latest to be considering the French ace, while Rangers could lose Alfredo Morelos.
Taylor would hardly be the instant replacement for either Edouard or Morelos, but he would certainly be good enough as a first reserve for both clubs’ main striker. Celtic have back-up in Leigh Griffiths, Patryk Klimala and Vakoun Bayo.
The Hoops have plenty of fire power, but Rangers have little other options than Jermaine Defoe – unless Flo Kamberi agrees a permanent deal. The Gers need Taylor more than Celtic.
