Champions League finalist says he actually nearly signed for Leeds at one point, ‘it was all agreed’
Leeds United have had a few interesting transfer near misses over the years.
Indeed, Josko Gvardiol nearly signed for Leeds at one point, while Cody Gakpo looked set for Leeds before his move to Liverpool.
On top of that, Viktor Gyokeres was a Leeds target before the striker headed to Sporting CP.
Now, another high-profile player has claimed that he almost signed for Leeds United.
Speaking on Undr the Cosh, Jermaine Pennant has been discussing his career, and he says that he very nearly signed for Leeds when Neil Warnock was at the club.
According to Pennant, everything was agreed for this deal to be done, but, at the last minute, Tony Pulis called the transfer off.

Jermaine Pennant nearly joined Leeds
Pennant spoke about how he almost signed for Leeds from Stoke City.
Pennant had been a Champions League finalist with Liverpool at one point, but he was ready to drop down to the second-tier with Leeds under Warnock.
Interestingly, Pennant did play for Leeds on loan early in his career when he was contracted to Arsenal.
“Neil Warnock came in for me to go to Leeds. I wasn’t playing, I wasn’t even in the starting like squad. You know, there’s certain times I was just coming to the game, sitting in the stand with the family or in the box and not even being involved,” Pennant said.
And Warnock came in and I thought, oh my God, amazing, Leeds were in the championship at the time. So I didn’t care, I was like, I don’t care, I’d love to go back to Leeds, please. Everyone agreed, it was all agreed.
And they said, yeah, we’ve agreed it. I’ve spoken to Warnock, they’re gonna do it. And then the next day, I got a call.
And he said, it’s off. Why? I said, no, Pulis has then cancelled it.”
What happened to Jermaine Pennant after Leeds move fell through?
Jermaine Pennant didn’t get his move to Leeds United, and, after that move fell through, his career began to unravel somewhat.
Indeed, Pennant was frozen out at Stoke City, but he made an emergency loan move to Wolves in October that season.
However, Pennant failed to impress at Wolves, returning to Stoke in January.
Pennant would only play a handful of times for Stoke from that point onwards, before he made a list of very strange moves.
Pennant headed to India to play for Pune City, before returning to England with Wigan.
After a season at Wigan, Pennant headed to Singapore to play for Tampines Rovers before returning to the UK for spells with Billericay and Bury.
Pennant played for some huge clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool, but, the back end of his career was a bizarre journey to say the least.
