Champions League final opponents say a lot about Steve McClaren’s Newcastle United reign
Tottenham Hotspur followed in the footsteps of Liverpool yesterday evening by producing an incredible comeback against Ajax. The result is an all-English final in Madrid next month. Tottenham taking on Liverpool will undoubtedly have football fans up and down the country taking an interest. In particular, it seems, fans from Newcastle United.
This tweet was doing the rounds after the game:
Reminder: Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko were relegated their one season together as Newcastle teammates in 2015/16.
Now they will line up in the Champions League final against eachother three seasons later.

Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum are indeed set to go toe-to-toe in the Champions League final. The pair were part of the Newcastle United team relegated from the Premier League in the 2015-16 season.
That summer both left the club. Wijnaldum joined Liverpool for a fee. Sissoko joined Tottenham after Euro 2016 for a fee to be in the region of £30 million.

The fact Newcastle got relegated with an impressive team containing both players will baffle fans at St James’ Park.
Many probably rightly blame the manager, Steve McClaren for that calamitous campaign. This recent evidence certainly won’t help disprove that claim.
Newcastle eventually got a combined £55 million for the pair, which now looks like pennies after their inspiring semi-final performances.
Whilst both left under fairly different circumstances, and certainly varied levels of respect from Newcastle fans, it will be fascinating to supporters to see the relegated pair go head-to-head.
