‘Chamberlain thriving in new role’ – Three things learnt from Arsenal 2-1 Manchester City

Sanchez turns up for the big occasion

It was never going to be anyone else, was it?

Cometh the hour, cometh the man as Arsenal talisman – and stand-out player all season – came up with the goods when it mattered to fire the Gunners into a third FA Cup final in four years.

Predatory inside the six-yard box he latched onto Danny Welbeck’s mis-kick, using his strength to fend off the challenge of Gael Clichy behind him before smashing the ball through the legs of City captain Vincent Kompany and into the corner to send the red side of Wembley into raptures.

This goal – the 38th that the Chilean has been involved in this season (24 goals, 14 assists) – now means he’s been part of more goals than any Premier League player across all competitions.

Up until that point it had actually been a fairly uninspiring performance, unable to find a way through the middle after being extremely well marshalled by Kompany.

Yet big players have a knack of having the final say on the big occasions, and Sanchez’s fourth goal at Wembley since moving to Arsenal proved to be the defining blow in a heavyweight clash on Sunday.
