Celtic turn down loan move for £14k-a-week player Brendan Rodgers has never used

The transfer news is coming thick and fast for the Celtic fans today as the January window nears its closing date.

With most of the headlines concerned around players coming to the club, there is also a need to get players off the books who are not going to contribute now or at any point in the future.

TBR Celtic told earlier how David Turnbull looks to be heading out of Celtic this month and now it’s the turn of James McCarthy.

One of Ange Postecoglou’s first signings, the 33-year-old midfielder hasn’t featured at all under Brendan Rodgers since he took over in the summer.

But despite that, a report from (10:48) has said that Celtic have rejected a loan offer from Greek side Volos FC.

According to the report, the reason the Parkhead club have rejected the offer is because Celtic want a larger percentage of McCarthy’s £14k per week salary covered by the Greek side.

To me that is very bizarre considering the club have been paying McCarthy his full wage to do the square root of nothing for the Celtic first team for the past 18 months.

Since signing for Celtic for free in 2021, the former Republic of Ireland international has been a bit part player at the club.

Making just 27 appearances in total for Celtic, McCarthy has cost the club a fortune despite being a free transfer. []

With Brendan Rodgers resisting the urge to play him this season despite struggling to find a player to cover for the injured Reo Hatate in the middle of the park, it now seems that McCarthy’s time at Celtic could be coming to an end.

His only appearance in the green and white Hoops was for the Celtic B team in December where McCarthy played in the defeat to East Kilbride.

Quite how much of McCarthy’s salary Celtic are expecting clubs to pick up is a mystery but this is one player the club needs to do all they can to get off the wage bill.
