Celtic trialist Tom Leighton has known failed transfer target David Turnbull for years

A Celtic XI took on Arbroath in a pre-season friendly yesterday, losing 1-0. Celtic had three trialists involved in the game, including former Watford youngster Tom Leighton.

As , the versatile defender operated at right-back for the game.

, Celtic are keen on signing the 18-year-old. He left Motherwell for Watford in 2017, . Leighton is now a free agent. 

The Celtic trialist will, therefore, be a lot easier to sign than a player they tried desperately to do so this summer. 

David Turnbull was very nearly a Celtic player this summer. to sign the Motherwell youngster was scuppered twice in June.

First of all, the two parties could not come to terms on a contract. Once that was sorted, Turnbull failed a medical and Celtic pulled the plug. 

Turnbull and Leighton go way back. Not only did the pair both come through the ranks together at Motherwell, but internationally as well. 

At the age of 14 and 13 respectively, Turnbull and Leighton represented Scotland in the International Children’s Games in 2014,

The pair made the final of the competition in Sydney Australia in a team that also contained recent Rangers signing Jake Hastie.

Celtic look likely to revisit their interest in Turnbull in the near future. Perhaps he and Leighton could end up being reunited at Parkhead.
