Celtic reportedly want left-back that Tony Mowbray said has a ‘wonderful left-foot’, Rangers are also linked
Celtic reportedly want left-back Barry Douglas this summer on a free transfer, with his Leeds United contract about to expire. The defender has been on loan with Tony Mowbray’s Blackburn during 2020-21, who heaped praise on the defender back in February. Rangers are also being linked.
Douglas, 31, only joined Leeds in the summer of 2018 but managed just 44 appearances in his first two season. His third saw him go on loan to Blackburn. Following 31 outings for the Championship side, Douglas was expected to sign a contract with Blackburn – but he is now in limbo.
Leeds have confirmed he will leave on a free on June 30 when his deal expires. that while Blackburn remain an option – Celtic and Rangers are showing interest. The one-time Scotland international, born in Glasgow, is a boyhood Rangers fan.
Back in February, ex-Celtic gaffer Mowbray spoke to Lancashire Live as Douglas returned from injury. He heaped massive praise on the set-piece specialist, telling the media that the £10,000-a-week () defender has a “wonderful left foot” – amid interest from both Old Firm sides.
“He came for his delivery. He’s got a wonderful left foot,” “But he’s a good lad, he’s got wonderful attributes and great feet, a good technician. He’s starting to come good. There were an initial few weeks where he found it difficult to settle, but I think he’s there now and he’s a big plus for our team.”

Would Douglas start for Celtic, amid Mowbray comments?
With Diego Laxalt returning to Milan, Celtic need a left-back – as well as numerous other positions all over the pitch. Scotland international Greg Taylor is Celtic’s current option, while Boli Bolingoli remains contracted at Celtic until 2023. However, the latter’s Celtic spell is set to be at an end.
So, if Douglas joined, he would certainly be in with a shout of starting on the left side of the defence. While he is in his thirties, he still offers plenty – both going forward and defensively. On a free, he is certainly worth signing for a couple of years – for both Celtic, or Rangers.
