Celtic rebuild should start with exciting 23-year-old striker tipped for ‘the very top of the game’ – TBR View
Celtic have a lot of work to do to ensure they can at least finish this season on a high before ensuring they can be competitive next season, and one aspect of this is in the transfer market – basically, they need new players.
One area which could do with bolstering is up front, given Odsonne Edouard is regularly being linked with a move away, Leigh Griffiths turns 31 this year, Albian Ajeti hasn’t impressed enough and Patryk Klimala is very much a work in progress.
One player Celtic have been linked with this month is Taiwo Awoniyi, on the books at Liverpool but currently on loan at Union Berlin, where he’s registered in 13 Bundesliga games, as well as an assist in the DFB-Pokal.
The 23-year-old has been a key member of the German outfit’s surprise run this term, with Urs Fischer’s side fifth place in the Bundesliga, only three points behind Borussia Dortmund and the Champions League spots.
According to , Celtic and Rangers are ready to compete for Awoniyi’s signature and both are leading the chase amid interest from the English Premier League.
The reigning English champions are apparently considering a sale as they could pocket “more than £5million” for a player they paid a relatively nominal fee for.
The report explains that the Nigeria Under-23 international hasn’t played for Liverpool due to problems with a work permit, but regular minutes this campaign with Union Berlin could help resolve that issue.
Put simply, Celtic need to strengthen their ranks this year and a player like Awoniyi, who has shown he can deliver at the top level, is young and shouldn’t be overly expensive, is one they should look to sign.
He is quick, strong, a considerable threat from set-pieces, boasts composure in the box, and is a great finisher under pressure.

Awoniyi’s former coach, Atiba Bankole, told earlier this week: “His ability to keep getting better and better and adapt his game will keep him in good stead.”
“He can go to the very top of the game. Taiwo has a very strong mentality and nothing fazes him. No matter how hard the challenge might seem.”
If Liverpool do choose to sell him, then a team like Celtic, which regularly challenges for trophies and competes in Europe, would be a great shout – and likewise, he’d be the kind of player who could help them get there again.
