Celtic player urges board to hand soon-to-be free agent a new deal

as saying that he is desperate for Celtic to hand captain Scott Brown a new contract, and keep him at Parkhead for another season – as the Hoops skipper looks set to see his contract expire in May.

Brown, 35, is close to ending his 14-year stint at Parkhead since joining the club from Hibernian in 2007. He has become one of the club’s biggest legendary figures, and up there with the best captains of Celtic – having been crucial to nine-in-a-row.

This season, midfielder Brown has surpassed an enormous 600 appearances in all competitions for the Glasgow club. Having played 61 times for Hibs and boasting 55 caps for Scotland, he has well over 700 professional matches in the locker.

But he could finally end his Celtic stint this summer, as his contract remains due to expire at the end of May. Forrest, though, is keen to see Brown remain at Celtic for another season – instead of seeing Brown depart for a new club.

“I think everybody involved at the club: players, staff, wants that [for Brown to remain at Celtic],” . “We were talking about numbers there and if you look at his you will see they are up there with the very fittest players, he never misses training.

“It would be good if he stayed here for another year. He has been important to us for so long. I can see him playing here for another year and then it is about how he feels with his body. The way he is playing just now he is good for another year.”

TBR’s view – Brown will not want to end his Celtic stint like this

But the debate remains, does he still add quality to a Celtic side that have completely flopped this season? Indeed, Brown has been in and out of the side of late – but has started the two matches since John Kennedy took interim charge.

Leaving Celtic and ending his playing days with the club in a season where Rangers won the title will not be the way Brown wants to end his Hoops spell. Does he stay for another season, with Rangers likely to be favourites next term?

Does he stay and try to win it, or admit damage limitation and leave now? Even if he wants to stay, Celtic may choose to go in a different direction. Time will tell.
