Celtic-owned defender says club are working on deal, two Premier League clubs linked
that loan side KV Oostende are currently working on securing a permanent deal for the on-loan Celtic giant – despite interest from two Premier League clubs, among others.
Hendry, 25, joined Belgian side Oostende on loan for the 2020-21 season last summer having fallen down the pecking order at Celtic. But his form in Belgium has been excellent, playing 25 times this season and scoring twice.
The defender has worked his way back into Steve Clarke’s Scotland set-up – earning his fifth cap in the most-recent international break. Celtic rate Hendry in the region of £10million, but Oostende have the chance to sign him for £2million.
Now, Hendry has told the Record that Oostende are working on a deal to sign him permanently – and that he wants to be playing regular football next season, whichever shirt he is wearing. The Record claim Wolves, Burnley and Genk are also interested.
“I have a year left on my contract but Oostende have first option. They are trying to activate that,” . “Those talks are on-going with my management team just now. I just need to concentrate on my football and we’ll see what happens from there.”
“I haven’t really thought about my future. The only thing is that wherever I am next season I know I need to be playing or having a chance of playing because that is the only way I will continue to improve and develop as a player.”
TBR’s view – How much is Hendry worth, and should Celtic keep?
Yes, he has enjoyed an excellent season but it must not be forgotten that he did make a couple of mistakes during his brief stint at Celtic. Claims of a £10million price tag is somewhat optimistic, but they can certainly get more than £2million.
That is the figure Celtic are in danger of being forced into selling him for having agreed that last summer. But if a move falls through, Celtic should only entertain offers of more thsn £5million going forward. Does he have a future at Celtic? Yes.
