Celtic fans react as Stuart Armstrong shines for Southampton on Monday night

Stuart Armstrong netted his ninth goal in Southampton colours on Monday night as the Saints secured a late point at Old Trafford against Manchester United – and Celtic fans have applauded their former midfielder.

Armstrong, 28, has failed to replicate his Celtic form at Southampton following his £7million move to St. Mary’s Stadium in the summer of 2018 – though he is beginning to show glimpses of his Celtic quality.

In 2016-17, Armstrong scored 17 goals and created seven more for Celtic in Brendan Rodgers’ first season. His time at Southampton has yielded just nine goals in 63 outings – creating only five.

However, he opened the scoring on Monday night as Nathan Redmond’s cross was impeccably controlled before the Scotland international calmly slotted past goalkeeper David De Gea.

Manchester United are in great form and they instantly re-took the lead. Anthony Martial’s strength laid off Marcus Rashford who netted well, before Martial cut inside and found the back of the net himself.

However, it was Southampton who had the last laugh – as substitute Michael Obafemi scored in the 97th minute from a James Ward-Prowse corner. It is a hammer blow for United, who missed the chance to go third.

Celtic supporters reacted to Armstrong’s display on Twitter and many applauded their former star for his performance and goal. One fan even stated he was better than Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.
