‘Celtic are in a precarious position’: Pundit speaks out on Howe Tottenham prospect
Alan Stubbs says Celtic should be feeling nervous about their prospects of landing Eddie Howe.
The former Bournemouth manager was widely expected to have been named manager weeks ago, but as yet there is no indication as to who will be in the dugout next season.
Howe remains a popular choice among supporters, but there has been no word from the club as to the managerial situation and John Kennedy remains in charge on an interim basis.
New CEO Dominic McKay began his time at the club this week, and former Celtic defender Stubbs believes they could face a tricky time trying to get the Howe deal over the line.
The former Hibs and St Mirren boss, however, has played down suggestions that Howe could be in line to replace Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.
29-year-old Ryan Mason has taken on the role until the end of the season.
Speaking on , Stubbs said: “I think from Eddie Howe’s point of view he is in a really strong position.
“He is holding all the aces at this moment in time.
“From Celtic’s point of view it looks like they’ve put all their eggs in one basket and they don’t know if they are going to get their man because he’s not prepared to make a decision.
“If I was Dominic McKay and Dermot Desmond I’d be quite nervous right now.
“It’s out there, it’s public that Eddie Howe is their number one choice and if this doesn’t happen the first question to the next man is going to be ‘How do you feel that you weren’t the number one choice?’
“I think a club the size of Celtic, not necessarily that they are prepared to wait, they deserve a quick answer.
“I don’t mean to be disrespectful here but this will be the biggest challenge Eddie Howe has ever faced.
“It’s a huge step up for him as a manager. He did a really good job at Bournemouth, there is no denying that. He went to Burnley and it probably wasn’t what he thought it was and moved south again for family reasons.”
“It’s a really precarious position Celtic find themselves in, but for me personally I don’t think Eddie Howe would be a candidate for the Tottenham job.
“I think Tottenham will look for someone different and try to get a top European coach.”
