Celtic and Rangers transfer blow: Club confirm free agent rejected Scottish clubs to rejoin European outfit
Barry Douglas has made the surprise move to rejoin Polish side Lech Poznan after being released by Leeds this week. The Scottish left-back was a reported target for both Celtic and Rangers this summer. But,
Douglas, 31, endured a tricky time at Leeds. Joining the club in difficult circumstances after helping Wolves gain promotion, he was indifferent in his first season. While Leeds were promoted in his second, he was rarely used. It saw him go on loan to Blackburn last season.
His contract was due to end this summer and Leeds have chosen not to extend it. Reports in June claimed Celtic and Rangers were considering Douglas, but it now appears Douglas will sign a two-year deal with Poznan. They confirm that he is flying to Poland to re-sign with Poznan.
Douglas spent over two seasons at Poznan between 2013 and 2016, clocking up 75 appearances. In that time, he scored five goals and scored 26 more. The defender, who recently became a Father for the second time, is said to be flying to Poland to sign a two-year deal – and he rejected Scottish clubs.
“The 31-year-old had a lot of offers from English and Scottish clubs, but decided to continue his career in Poland. Barry returns to a well-known place, as well as to coach Maciej Skorża, with whom he cooperated in 2015, when Kolejorz won the Polish League title,”
Leeds news: Douglas right to ignore Celtic and Rangers for Poznan?
Well, at either Scottish club, the chances of Douglas being first choice were always going to be minimal. He is a boyhood Rangers fan so moving to Celtic was always going to be unlikely. Rangers boast Croatia’s first-choice left-back in Borna Barisic. So game time would have been a rarity.
Moving to a club he knows well is a solid move for Douglas, where he will pen a deal until the summer of 2023. However, it comes as a surprise that he would return to Poland given he has a young family.
