‘Caused mayhem’: BBC pundit in awe of £120k-a-week Everton man, previously unsure about him

Everton defender Yerry Mina has been praised by BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks following his great display for Carlo Ancelotti’s charges at the weekend.

The Toffees returned to the top of the Premier League table with a fourth victory from four league games, running out 4-2 winners over Brighton at Goodison Park.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his incredible scoring run with his sixth Premier League goal of the season and ninth in all competitions, a towering header in the 16th minute.

A Jordan Pickford error led to Neal Maupay firing home on 41 minutes, but Mina nodded Everton back in front in first-half injury time.

Goal number three saw Alex Iwobi, who had come on as a first-half substitute after Richarlison picked up a knock, deliver a cross at the back post for Rodriguez to clinically put away.

Iwobi then provided a sublime defence-splitting pass for Abdoulaye Doucoure to whip towards Rodriguez, who made no mistake with a cool sidefooted finish.

As well as from his goal, Mina was impressive at the back, keeping the dangerous Aaron Connolly at bay and giving him little to work with.

“I’ve never been totally convinced about Yerry Mina’s defensive qualities,” admitted Crooks.

“He’s certainly big, very strong and imposing but he also lacks moments in concentration, he is a terrible ball-watcher and prone to poor distribution. However, that was not the Yerry Mina I saw against Brighton.

“The Colombia international was putting his body on the line for the team late in the second half when the game was won. He caused mayhem in the opposition penalty area and seems to be at the heart of this extraordinary renaissance going on at Goodison Park.

“The look of disgust he gave Jordan Pickford when the England keeper dropped a catch I could have caught emphasised just how important keeping a clean sheet was to the Everton defender.”

Praiseworthy comments from Crooks, and honest too, admitting he’s never previously rated him that highly but being left in awe of his display against Brighton.

The £ ace is just one of numerous Everton players who have kicked up a gear this season and looking revitalised under Carlo Ancelotti.

Things are going amazingly at Goodison right now and long may it continue.
