‘He was fantastic’: Carragher thought one Liverpool player was even better than Van Dijk at Wembley
Liverpool ran out winners at Wembley yesterday as they saw off Chelsea in the League Cup final following a dramatic penalty shootout.
Blues keeper Kepa was the villain of the piece despite being brought in to be the hero. It was a decision from Thomas Tuchel which has brought huge criticism, with Edouard Mendy removed from the action despite having a fine game in the sticks for Chelsea.
For Liverpool, it was another performance of grit and determination rather than fluent football that got them over the line in the end. A number of players put in good performances, with Virgil van Dijk given the official man of the match award on the day.

However, according to Sky’s Jamie Carragher, another Liverpool player, Luis Diaz, was also worth of mentioning for his impact on the tie at Wembley.
“He was fantastic. I think Virgil van Dijk got the man-of-the-match award but I think he was Liverpool’s best player. He was outstanding,” Carragher said on following the game.
Diaz has settled in quickly at Liverpool since his signing in January. Fellow Sky pundit Gary Neville also praised Diaz’s performance yesterday, while Rio Ferdinand has backed Diaz to be a huge problem for Premier League defenders.
TBR’s View: Diaz Could Be Long-Term Salah Successor
It’s looking an absolute masterstroke move this from Liverpool already. They beat Tottenham to the signing of Diaz and you can see why they were so keen to make their move.
He has everything Jurgen Klopp wants in a Liverpool player. Speed, energy, desire, and a willingness to work for the team above personal glory. In a nutshell, Luis Diaz is looking every bit the Premier League player already.
Long-term, Liverpool might have also solved the issue of Mo Salah. With no new contract sorted yet, and Diaz impressing, the clamour to tie down the Egyptian might not be seen as quite so vital just now.
