Carlo Ancelotti plans Everton talks over handing Seamus Coleman new contract
Carlo Ancelotti has revealed – via the – that he will hold talks with Marcel Brands early next week over handing Everton captain Seamus Coleman a new contract.
The Italian intends to sit down with the Toffees’ Director of Football after the conclusion of the Premier League season to discuss the futures of Coleman, Joshua King and Robin Olsen.
King is set to be out of contract at the end of next month after only signing a short-term deal upon his arrival at Goodison Park from Bournemouth in February, while Olsen will return to Roma following his year-long loan spell.
Coleman has one year remaining on the £70,000-per-week () contract the right-back signed in 2017, but has seen his future thrown into some doubt with Ancelotti long said to be eying a long-term replacement () for the Republic of Ireland international.
Ancelotti has reiterated that Everton still intend to sign a new full-back as one of their three desired summer deals, but a new contract for Coleman is still high on the order.
“We have some positions to consider – Josh, Robin Olsen – and other players like Seamus, who we would like to renew the contract,” the Blues boss . “With Marcel Brands after the end of the season on Monday or Tuesday we are going to talk about all these kinds of situations.”
Brands had expressed to Everton’s event last month that he hoped to persuade Coleman to sign a new contract, although Ancelotti added the following week that there was no rush to agree on terms as his Goodison Park future was already written in stone.
“I don’t think we have to talk about the contract,” he told . “The contract that Seamus has with the club and this team is forever. It doesn’t mean one year long or two years long. Seamus’ contract with Everton is forever.”
TBR’s view:
Obviously, Coleman’s contract with Everton is not actually for forever, but it would be a wise move for the Toffees to try and secure his long-term future as the 32-year-old has still performed well for much of the season and will have a role to play next term.
Injuries have to increase Ancelotti’s need for new options in the transfer market, but Coleman’s role off the pitch is as high as it is on the field with his leadership key and character influential over younger players.
Coleman’s character has long been a trait admired by many within the game, including Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who stated – via the – in 2017 after Coleman underwent after a horrendous double break:
“I do not know him personally, but as a football supporter I love his character, his positive approach to the game and his commitment to his club. There is a lot to admire about this player.”
