‘Cannot be ruled out’: Tottenham could end up in bidding war with Chelsea for ‘amazing’ defender – journalist

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has sent another message to the club that investment is needed in January.

Their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa wouldn’t have filled any Spurs fans with confidence that they can once again qualify for the Champions League.

Speaking after yesterday’s defeat, Conte insisted that his side need investment to continue competing at the top of the table.

“To become a title contender, to become a team ready to fight to win something you need to have a solid foundation,”

“That means to have 14 or 15 strong players, quality and the other young players to develop.

“And [then] every season you can add two players but two players to invest £50m, £60m, £70m and in this way it means you are signing important players that improve quality and the level of your team but this is a process.”

Conte knows Spurs need reinforcements

There are a number of positions that Conte will be keen to try and improve this month.

Having another quality attacker in the squad is essential, especially seeing how poorly Spurs played without Dejan Kulusevski yesterday.

They also have a dilemma at right wing-back, with Matt Doherty not having his best game yesterday.

Emerson Royal and Djed Spence both came on in the second-half, .

Tottenham have recently been linked with Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries.

However, that a bidding war for Dumfries could break out in January, with several top sides interested in his services.

Bidding war could start for Tottenham target Dumfries

: “Dumfries had a star turn in the World Cup, with goals and assists.

“Given the prices that are circulating, 60 million could fit, but even 50 million could be good.

“A bidding war cannot be ruled out with Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich, who could offer the Moroccan flanker [Noussair] Mazraoui as a quid pro quo, but he costs and could fetch around 20 million.

“Tottenham are also on the player and could offer Emerson Royal.”

The 26-year-old certainly fits the system that Conte uses at Tottenham as an attacking wing-back.

If a bidding war for Dumfries does break out, Spurs will be hoping that Royal could sweeten the deal for the Italian club.

Spurs face competition from Chelsea for Dumfries, Royal could sweeten the deal

that Inter are really interested in signing the Brazilian.

It could be a deal that suits all parties, but Spurs will have to convince Dumfries to head to north London.

Chelsea’s interest could make it a difficult deal for Tottenham to do.

Reece James’s recent injury woes and Cesar Azpilicueta’s age mean a right-back could be high on their list of priorities too.

Given Antonio Conte only has six months left on his current deal, the Dutchman may want assurances he plans to renew his deal.

If they can’t do a deal with Dumfries, Tottenham may once again look at Sporting full-back Pedro Porro
