Can Michael Keane become Everton’s new source for goals at the back?
Everton defender Michael Keane could become the club’s latest goalscoring defender.
The 2017 signing from Burnley has offered the greatest goal threat of any Premier League defender this term from set-pieces, .
The centre-half has produced 12 shots from free-kicks and corners, all 12 of which have come from inside the penalty area.
That’s four more than Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso, who is one of the most attack-minded defenders in the division, but seven more than the Spaniard from inside the box.
All 12 of Keane’s efforts from inside the area have been headed attempts.
Remarkably, he’s already only one behind the 13 he managed in the whole of last season.
Even more impressively, Keane leads the way despite missing two games nursing a fractured skull.
Everton’s secret weapon?
Keane is not somebody you might expect to be a threat, but he is rapidly proving he can be.
At 6ft 3ins, Keane definitely has the opportunity to excel in the opposition box.
Over the years Everton have always had goalscoring defenders in their ranks.
Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines have had good goalscoring records whilst at Goodison Park.
Phil Jagielka has also weighed in with a few down the years, as did Joleon Lescott during the three years he spent on Merseyside.
Keane looks like he could be the man to continue the trend.
If he can keep getting in there, he will certainly add to his one goal and one assist notched so far.
Clearly Marco Silva has identified him as a potential threat, and instructed his set-piece takers to find him.
