‘Can lights up Vicarage Road’ – Three things learnt from Watford 0-1 Liverpool
Lallana’s return rounds off perfect night for the Reds
In a game that will be remembered for a moment of individual brilliance and not much else, Liverpool fans will be delighted to have seen the return of midfield maestro Adam Lallana.
The 28-year-old might not have expected to enter the fray just as early as he did due to Philippe Coutinho’s dead leg after ten minutes, but nevertheless he looked lively and impressed.
Minutes before Emre Can took centre-stage it was Lallana who nearly converted the spectacular, volleying Heurelho Gomes’ punch first-time and seeing it crash back off the underside of the crossbar and be cleared away in a rare moment of quality on the Vicarage Road pitch on Monday.
The England midfielder was involved in Can’s effort, however, having quick feet on the right-hand side to get away from his man before feeding Lucas – and everyone knows what happened next.
He was clearly tiring after a 70-minute stint on his return to football, missing the opportunity to secure the points for the visitors on a rampaging counter-attack, but Jurgen Klopp will no doubt be delighted to have him back fit and he was deservedly given a rest five minutes from time by the Liverpool boss.
Liverpool’s final three matches aren’t the most daunting on paper (Southampton, West Ham and Middlesbrough), but having Lallana back will feel like having a brand new-signing for the Reds.
