‘Can lights up Vicarage Road’ – Three things learnt from Watford 0-1 Liverpool
Can’s moment of brilliance lights up Vicarage Road
In a tepid, uneventful and ultimately boring first-half at Vicarage Road, a moment of pure brilliance came from the unlikeliest source in the shape of Liverpool midfielder Emre Can.
Set to go into half-time with the scores level after an underwhelming start to a critical game in the Reds’ top four hopes, the German unleashed a sensational overhead kick to give his side a late lead.
What the Liverpool man – who was deployed in a deep midfield position by Jurgen Klopp for the trip to Watford – was doing inside the six-yard box in first-half stoppage time isn’t quite clear, but the tenacity of the German to attempt the spectacular paid off and was worthy of lighting up any game.
Despite being surrounded by two Watford defenders and standing just inside the edge of the penalty area, in one fluid movement he connected beautifully to send the ball rifling into the top corner.
For a team that contains the personnel of Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino, it perhaps wasn’t expected that Lucas Leiva and Emre Can would steal the show on Monday evening.
But in scoring arguably one of the goals of the season, the 23-year-old midfielder spear-headed a vital victory for the Reds and left them in pole position to claim an all-important top-four spot.
