‘By the end of next week’… What sources close to Kalvin Phillips are now saying about Newcastle United

Dean Jones expects reported Newcastle United target Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City ‘by the end of next week’.

The journalist claims that people close to the deal have given off the impression the midfielder prefers a move to Newcastle United over Juventus.

Eddie Howe will be keen to bolster his options in midfield this month following Sandro Tonali’s ban last year.

Newcastle’s interest in luring Kalvin Phillips away from the Etihad Stadium has been well-documented.

The Englishman has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park but a recent report has cast doubt over a possible deal due to City’s demands.

Indeed, the Magpies have reportedly been told they will have to pay a £5 million fee to loan Phillips for the remainder of the campaign. On top of that, City also want to include an obligation to buy the midfielder for £40 million.

But Dean Jones has offered a slightly more encouraging update for Newcastle, with the journalist sharing what people close to Phillips have been saying about the deal.

What sources close to Phillips deal have said about Newcastle

Speaking to , Jones claimed that people close to the Phillips situation have given off the impression he prefers a move to Newcastle over Juve.

“I mean, I expect Kalvin Phillips to have moved by the end of next week when the Premier League resumes because this little gap in play, in terms of the Premier League season, is a good moment to allow a move like this to finally come to life,” the journalist said.

“The aim for him is to be playing regularly in the top flight and if Newcastle can give him genuine optimism over his chances of getting that, then I think he’ll definitely be interested in it.

“People close to the situation give off the impression he’d be more likely to choose Newcastle still over something like Juventus, so I think that is definitely one we should look out for.”

Despite picking up a treble with City last year, it’s fair to say that Phillips’ time at the Etihad has been frustrating.

The Englishman completed a switch to Manchester back in the summer of 2022 after an impressive spell at Elland Road. The 28-year-old was a regular for England at the time after starring for Gareth Southgate’s side at Euro 2020.

But he’s struggled for minutes under Pep Guardiola due to the brilliance of Rodri in midfield. Phillips has even played a limited number of minutes in the Spaniard’s absence this season, though, indicating it’s time for him to seek out a new challenge.

A move to Tyneside would be ideal for Phillips and he seems like a good fit for Howe’s high-energy style of football. But this will be a difficult deal to get over the line, with City seemingly demanding a sizeable fee to even loan the Englishman out.
