Burnley’s Ben Mee showcases England credentials
Burnley stuck the boot into Tottenham’s title hopes on Saturday by defeating them 2-1 at Turf Moor in the Premier League.
The Clarets have now taken 18 points since a Boxing Day thrashing at the hands of Everton, with Sean Dyche overseeing a superb revival.
Burnley are now six points clear of the drop zone and if their latest performance is anything to go by, then Premier League football is a certainty for next season.
Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes netted the goals for the Clarets, but it was another player who shone.
Central defender Ben Mee is quietly going about his business as a solid member of the Clarets’ squad.
The 29-year-old is coming up to 300 appearances for Burnley and he skippered the side for the first half of the season.
This latest performance was a timely one which was overseen by England boss Gareth Southgate who was watching from the stands.
Mee coped impressively with the threat of the returning Harry Kane. His goal was a flash of brilliance but other than that he was kept relatively quiet.
His ball-playing style was evident.
Mee had a pass success of 73% whilst he also won five aerial duels.
Southgate has proven in the past that he doesn’t select players based on reputation or the club which they play for.
Burnley might be an unfashionable club when it comes to the Premier League, but Mee might be earning the call-up sooner rather than later.
