Bundesliga club give up on signing Liverpool talent before transfer deadline amid ‘price explosion’

Liverpool are still waiting for a first summer signing but appear to be closing in on a major sale ahead of next week’s transfer deadline.

The Reds have endured a rather quiet summer despite embarking on a new era under Arne Slot.

Liverpool are the only Premier League team yet to bring in a new signing this summer and time is running out for new arrivals.

Liverpool did want a new midfielder but Martin Zubimendi reject a move to Anfield, deciding to stay with Real Sociedad instead.

Fans may still hope for a signing from somewhere but Liverpool may actually be more focused on selling players right now.

Sepp van den Berg transfer latest

claim that Liverpool have agreed to sell 20-year-old forward Harvey Blair to Portsmouth.

The Reds have a bigger sale in mind though with defender Sepp van den Berg expected to move on.

Van den Berg impressed Slot in pre-season but first-team action is unlikely for the Dutchman.

Bayer Leverkusen and Brentford are now in a £25mllion fight over Van den Berg but one club have effectively pulled out of the race.

claim that Wolfsburg – managed by former Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl – have ‘dropped out’ of the battle to land Van den Berg.

It’s suggested that a ‘price explosion’ has taken place at all levels of the deal with Liverpool demanding more and more money and Van Berg’s wage demands rising.

Wolfsburg had hope of a deal but have now given up, leaving the decision to come down to Bayer Leverkusen or Brentford.

Van den Berg has spent the last two seasons in Germany with Schalke and Mainz and could now return – but with Bayer Leverkusen rather than Wolfsburg.

Domino effect for Newcastle United

This news could be a major blow for Newcastle United given the knock-on effect highlighted by Kicker.

They suggest that Wolfsburg had identified Van den Berg as their ideal replacement for defender Maxence Lacroix.

Lacroix has been a key target for Crystal Palace with boss Oliver Glasner familiar with the Frenchman following his time as Wolfsburg boss.

In turn, Palace are looking at Lacroix with Marc Guehi attracting major interest.

Newcastle have been chasing Guehi but have yet to agree a deal with Palace, leading to the Magpies looking at alternatives such as Axel Disasi.

With Van den Berg no longer on Wolfsburg’s wish list, they may choose to keep Lacroix – and complicate Newcastle’s Guehi pursuit even more.
