Bruno Guimaraes says Eddie Howe told him to ‘follow’ one Arsenal player ‘everywhere’ during Newcastle’s win

Newcastle United produced a fantastic performance to beat Arsenal in the second leg of the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies had a 2-0 advantage over Mikel Arteta’s side thanks to their win at the Emirates in January. That made them the favourites, and they delivered.

Alexander Isak was unplayable and tormented Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba. Anthony Gordon was excellent too and scored a goal after Jacob Murphy opened the scoring in the first half.

Skipper Bruno Guimaraes had an outstanding game in the middle of the park, and he has revealed the tactical instructions Eddie Howe gave him before the game.

Bruno Guimaraes hails Eddie Howe’s tactics after he was told to man-mark Thomas Partey

Thomas Partey’s importance to the way Arsenal play is understated.

The Ghana international is key in their build-up, is excellent with his line-breaking passes and is arguably the most important player between attack and defence.

Arsenal’s chances of success against Newcastle depended on Partey in the middle of the park, and Howe knew that stopping him would help them win the game.

So, the Toon boss tasked Guimaraes to man-mark Partey and follow him everywhere, and the Brazilian did that brilliantly.

Speaking about the tactical tweak after the game, Guimaraes told Sky Sports: “For me, I was man-for-man on Partey. Wherever Partey was going, I had to follow him everywhere.

“So we try to stay man-for-man in the midfield, with Fabian (Schar) jumping on Rice and we score like that, Fabian recovered the ball and we score.

“This is credit for the gaffer. He said to us how we should press and we delivered. Like I said, the gaffer was amazing today.”

Eddie Howe could ruin Mikel Arteta’s party one more time

Arsenal’s focus now will be on the Premier League and the Champions League after bowing out of the two domestic cup competitions.

Liverpool are currently the favourites to win the league. They are six points above the Gunners despite playing a game fewer.

However, a couple of slip-ups from Liverpool and Arsenal beating them in their meeting in May could turn things around for the Gunners.

That is what Arteta will be hoping for, but the Spaniard will have to face Howe and Newcastle one more time this season – in their penultimate game.

Arsenal’s record against the Magpies this season is horrible – they’ve played three times and have lost all of them. Howe’s side could inflict more pain on the Gunners when they face each other at the Emirates in May.
