Bruno Fernandes says he was ‘really angry’ after Sporting blocked his move to Tottenham in 2019
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has claimed that he wanted to join Tottenham Hotspur from Sporting Lisbon back in 2019.
The Portuguese midfielder has mostly been fantastic in the Premier League. He has been one of United’s best players since he joined them, but things could’ve been very different.

Bruno Fernandes says he wanted to join Tottenham in 2019
Back in 2019, when Mauricio Pochettino was still at the helm, Tottenham were really keen to sign Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon.
Spurs even tabled an eye-watering £58 million bid to sign him, but the Portuguese outfit rejected that offer due to the ‘difficult’ structure of the deal. ()
Fernandes then joined Manchester United six months later in a deal that could rise to £68 million (), and he has been incredible for them. However, he has now claimed that he wanted to join Spurs before he moved to Old Trafford.
He told : “Obviously, I wanted to go to the Premier League. The manager, Mauricio Pochettino, was the one who wanted me there. It was a good offer but Sporting tried their best to keep me.”
“The president (Frederico Varandas) spoke with me but he spoke with me on the wrong day. It was the day after they decided to refuse the offer from Tottenham and I was really angry.
“Luckily for me, the manager (Marcel Keizer) was the right one at the right time.”

TBR View:
Fernandes definitely divides opinion in the Premier League, but it has to be said that he has been an incredible signing for Manchester United.
The Portugal international has played 134 times for the Red Devils in all competitions and has directly been involved in 91 goals (51 goals and 40 assists). That is a phenomenal return for an attacking midfielder.
Spurs would’ve loved a player of Fernandes’ quality back then, and they probably would still do now. That kind of output from midfield would take Tottenham to a whole new level, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Fernandes has started the season really well at Manchester United, and their fans will be hoping that he can keep this up until the end of the campaign.
