‘Brilliant’: Sky pundit lauds Matt Doherty during Tottenham win
Andy Hinchcliffe was full of praise for Matt Doherty during Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Brighton on Saturday, suggesting that his late challenge on Leandro Trossard was brilliant – in comments to (broadcast on 8/10; 19:15).
Doherty came in for a rare start on the south coast. Of course, Emerson Royal was suspended following his red card in the North London defeat.

For many, the Irishman’s inclusion was long overdue. Royal has come in for criticism, particularly for what he offers in the final third. So his suspension, for some, would have seemed like a blessing in disguise.
Matt Doherty brilliant in Tottenham win
Ultimately, it proved to be a positive evening for Tottenham as Harry Kane scored the only goal. And Doherty staked his claim by helping Spurs keep a clean sheet.

The 30-year-old was rusty at times. But there were certainly some bright moments. And he came to Spurs’ rescue in the final minutes when Trossard looked set to have a golden chance to equalise.
Doherty sensed the danger and managed to tackle Trossard. The challenge prompted Eric Dier to embrace the right wing-back. And Hinchcliffe outlined just how important that moment was from the defender.
“Matt Doherty, brilliant piece of defensive positioning,” . “He gets round on the cover as the ball breaks the way of Trossard.
“You see the reaction there of Eric Dier. It’s like they’ve scored, Tottenham. When the defenders do their job as well as that, no wonder his teammates appreciate it.”
Conte’s use of Doherty had been slightly perplexing. Of course, he has not had the easiest time at Tottenham.
But his best spell came during the latter stages of last season when Conte’s men were throwing everything at getting into the top-four.
Obviously, he went into pre-season injured. So it is understandable that he did not start the campaign. However, he has been in the match day squad for every top-flight game this term.
And Royal’s form hardly shut the door on the debate. Djed Spence meanwhile, is also waiting in the wings.
One performance may not change Conte’s mind on the pecking order. But Doherty showed glimpses of what he can bring to the side.
And it would be no surprise if many supporters were imploring Conte to stick with him by the time Royal is back available.
