‘Brilliant’: Rangers fans praise defender Joe Worrall

Rangers carved out a goalless draw at home to Villarreal on Thursday night – and some of the club’s supporters hailed defender Joe Worrall for his performance.

The Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor took the headlines for a number of top-class saves to earn his side a point in the Europa League group stages.

Steven Gerrard’s side saw Daniel Candeias sent off just before half-time and the defence stood firm to keep out Villarreal, meaning they are still in the hunt for qualification to the knockout rounds going into the last match but need to win.

The 21-year-old centre-back, who is on a season-long loan at Ibrox from Nottingham Forest, was recalled to the starting XI by Gerrard.

He repaid the manager’s faith by sticking to his defensive task well against Villarreal and is a towering figure in the box.

Worrall does face some healthy competition in the squad to nail down his starting position alongside the favoured Connor Goldson, with Nikola Katic and Gareth McAuley also in contention.

But the young centre-back proved himself to be useful in the Europa League and it will be intriguing to see if he starts away at Hearts on Sunday in the league.
